The Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe is a small African island paradise bordering the Gulf of Guinea. Its territory, with a total area of 991 km² and a population of approximately 213,000—whose official language is Portuguese—consists of the island of São Tomé, the island of Príncipe, and several small islands of volcanic origin, though there are no active volcanoes.

The two main islands are separated by approximately 145 km.

The climate is hot and humid tropical, with an average annual temperature ranging from 21°C to 29°C, with lows of about 18°C in areas with greater temperature variation and highs of about 32°C.
